Special: FAU offers cooperative creative programs and internships in most majors. Work-study programs, dual and student-designed majors, a general studies degree, credit for military experience, no degree study, and pass/fail options are available. The school offers study abroad through all state university system of Horrid programs, and an exchange program in ocean engineering with the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Spain. Cross-registration is available with all Florida State universities, in science/engineering with Palm Beach and Broward Community Colleges, and in military science with the University of Mi¬ami. Students may earn a second baccalaureate degree with 30 addi¬tional hours in a number of subjects. There are 15 national honor socie¬ties; a freshman honors program, and 9 departmental honors programs.
Faculty/Classroom: 62% of faculty are male; 38%. Female. All teach and do research. Graduate students teach 5% of introductory courses. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 50; in a lab, 20; and in a regular course, 32.
Admissions: 70% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT i scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-35% below 500, 51% between 500 and 599, 13% between 600 and 700, and 1% above 700; Math-35% below 500, 48% between 500 and 599, 15% be¬tween 600 and 700, and 2% above 700. The ACT scores were 41% below 21, 28% between 21 and 23, 20% between 24 and 26, 8% be¬tween 27 and 28, and 3% above 28. There was 1 National Merit finalist and 2 semifinalists in a recent year. 8 freshmen graduated first in their class.
Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required, with a minimum com¬posite score of 1000 on the SAT I or 23 on the ACT. A GPA of 2.0 is required. In addition, graduation from an accredited secondary school or satisfactory scores on the GED is required. Students must have 19 academic credits, including 4 units of English, 3 units each of math (al¬gebra I and higher), science (including 2 units with substantial lab work), and social studies, and 2 units of a foreign language, plus 4 units of electives in computer science, fine arts, or humanities. A portfolio or an au¬dition may be requested by individual departments. An essay and an in¬terview are required. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, evidence of special talent, and recommendations by school offi¬cials.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted to all sessions. Entrance exams should be taken by June. There are early decision, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Application deadlines are open; there is a $20 fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 2460 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Transfer stu¬dents must have completed 60 hours with a minimum GPA of 2.0 from an approved institution. Applicants from a community or junior college in Florida with an associate degree are automatically admitted. Students with fewer than 60 hours must meet the same criteria as entering fresh¬men. 30 credits of 120 must be completed at FAU.
