Special: Dual majors are permitted in all programs, and cross-registration is available with 4 other colleges in Hawaii. There are 3-2 engineering degree programs with St. Mary’s University in Texas and the University of Dayton. Internships with local companies, work-study programs, study abroad in Japan, and accelerated degree programs are available. Credit by exam, pass/fail options, and nondegree study are also offered. Faculty/Classroom: 65% of faculty are male; 35%, female. All teach undergraduates and 5% also do research. No introductory courses are taught by graduate students. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 22; in a lab, 22; and in a regular course, 25.
Admissions: 75% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-44% below 500, 51% between 500 and 599, 4% between 600 and 700, and 1% above 700; Math-47% below 500, 41% between 500 and 599, 10% beŽtween 600 and 700, and 2% above 700. The ACT scores were 59% below 21, 23% between 21 and 23, and 18% between 24 and 26.
Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required, with a minimum SAT I score of 460 on each part or a composite ACT score of 18. A GPA of 2.0 is required. In addition, students must have earned 16 credits, based on 2 years of science, 3 each of math and social studies, and 4 each of English and college preparatory electives. The GED is accepted. An essay is required, and an interview is recommended. Applications are accepted on disk and on-line. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are leadership record, personality/intangible qualities, and advanced placement or honor courses.
