Disabled Students: 75% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, and lowered telephones are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tuŽtoring in most subjects. There is remedial math, reading, and writing.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, escort service, shuttle buses, and informal discussions. There are pamphlets/posters/films, emergency telephones, and lighted pathways/sidewalks.
Programs of Study: HPU confers B.A., B.S., B.S.B.A., B.S.Comp.Sci., and B.S.N. degrees. Associate and master’s degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (marine science), BUSINESS {accounting, business adminisŽtration and management, business economics, human resources, interŽnational business management, management science, marketing manŽagement, personnel management, smalt business management, and tourism), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (communications, EnŽglish, and literature), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (comŽputer programming, computer science, oceanography, and science), EDUCATION (teaching English as a second/foreign language (TESOL/ TEFOL)), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (environ-mental science), HEALTH PROFESSIONS {nursing and premedicine), SOCIAL SCIENCE (Asian/Oriental studies, criminal justice, economics, history, human services, humanities, international relations, internationŽal studies, Pacific area studies, political science/government, psycholoŽgy, public administration, social science, social work, and sociology). Marine biology, nursing, and computer science are the strongest acaŽdemically. Travel industry management, marketing, and communicaŽtions are the largest.
Required: To graduate, students must complete a minimum of 124 seŽmester hours in most majors, including 21 to 62 in the major, with a minimum GPA of 2.0. The core curriculum includes English, communiŽcations, global systems, quantitative skills, economics, humanities, histoŽry, and the behavioral and natural sciences; specific courses include an introduction to computers and a career seminar.
Special: Upperclassmen may participate in internships and work-study programs with numerous companies. HPU also offers accelerated deŽgree and co-op programs in all majors, B.A.-B.S. degrees in most maŽjors, student-designed majors, dual majors in all business subjects, a 3-2 engineering degree with Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Southern California, credit for military experience, nonde-gree study, and pass/fail options. There are 9 national honor societies, a freshman honors program, and 5 departmental honors programs.
Faculty/Classroom: 60% of faculty are male; 40%, female. 90% teach undergraduates, 30% do research, and 30% do both. No introŽductory courses are taught by graduate students. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 25; in a lab, 15; and in a regular course, 23.
Admissions: 71% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-51% below 500, 35% between 500 and 599, 13% between 600 and 700, and 1% above 700; Math-54% below 500, 31% between 500 and 599, 14% beŽtween 600 and 700, and 1% above 700. 43% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 75% were in the top two fifths. Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is recommended. A GPA of 2.5 is required. Applicants must be high school graduates or have a GED certificate. The university prefers completion of 20 credits based on 4 years of English, 2 each of math and social studies, and 1 each of histoŽry and science. An essay and an interview are recommended. Certain programs, for example, marine science and nursing, have more specific admission requirements. Applications are accepted on computer disk. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are recommendations by school officials, advanced placement or honor courses, and evidence of special talent.
