Disabled Students: 80% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, lowered telephones, spe¬cially designed dormitory rooms, cassette recorders, talking calculators, a TDY terminal, a magnifier projector, a large-print typewriter, and taped textbooks are available.

Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tu¬toring in most subjects. There is remedial math, reading, and writing.

Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, self-defense education, informal discussions, and emer¬gency telephones. There are lighted pathways/sidewalks.

Programs of Study: UH Hilo confers B.A., B.S., B.B.A., and B.S.N. degrees. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in AGRICULTURE (agricul¬ture), BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science and marine science), BUSINESS (business administration and management), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art, English, linguistics, music, and speech/debate/rhetoric), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, natural sciences, and physics), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (nursing), SOCIAL SCIENCE (anthropology, economics, geography, Hawaiian studies, history, Japannese studies, liberal arts/general studies, philosophy, political science/ government, psychology, and sociology). Business, computer science, biology are the strongest academically. Business, psychology, and ma¬rine science are the largest.

Required: To graduate, students must earn a minimum of 120 semes¬ter hours, including at least 30 in the college from which a degree is sought, with a 2.0 GPA overall and in the major. Students also must complete general education requirements, including 12 semester hours each of humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, and 6 semes¬ter hours each of communication skills, quantitative and logical reason¬ing, and world cultures.

Special: UHH offers cross-registration with Hawaii Community Col¬lege, a political science legislative internship, and many work-study pro¬grams. Students may study abroad through a variety of programs. The school permits a student-designed liberal studies major, dual degrees, a 3-2 engineering degree with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, nonde-gree study, pass/fail options, and credit for military experience. There is a freshman honors program, and 1 departmental honors program.

Faculty/Classroom: 65% of faculty are male; 35%, female. All both teach and do research. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 20; in a lab, 25; and in a regular course, 17.

Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required. A GPA of 2.5 is re¬quired. Applicants should be high school graduates, with a GPA of 2.5, or present a GED certificate. Students should have earned 20 academic credits, including 4 units of English, 2 of math beyond prealgebra, 2 from among the natural and social sciences, and math and 7 of elec-tives, with English beyond the 4-year minimum and foreign language recommended. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, rec¬ommendations by school officials, and evidence of special talent.

Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. Entrance exams should be taken by November of the senior year. There is an early ad¬missions plan. Check with the school for current application deadlines and fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.

Transfer: 446 transfer students enrolled in a recent year. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.0; those with fewer than 24 college credits must submit their high school transcript and SAT 1 or ACT results. 30 credits of 120 must be completed at UH Hilo.
