Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, including a campus tour and a meeting with an admissions counselor. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes. To schedule a visit, contact the Admissions Office at (808) 933-3714.
Financial Aid: In a recent year, 30% of all freshmen and 35% of conŽtinuing students received some form of financial aid. 23% of freshmen and 31% of continuing students received need-based aid. The average freshman award was $3286. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $1413 ($3286 maximum); loans averaged $1281 ($2625 maximum); and work contracts averaged $592 ($2699 maxiŽmum). 64% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $1253. The average financial indebtedness of a recent graduate was $9120. UH Hilo is a member of CSS. The FAFSA is required.
International Students: There were 207 international students enŽrolled in a recent year. The school actively recruits these students. AppliŽcants must score 500 on the TOEFL and also take the SAT I (preferred) or the ACT.
Computers: The mainframes are a DEC VAX 11/750, a VAX 8550, a VAX 8650, a MicroVAX II, and an IBM 3081D. There are 108 PCs and terminals in various locations on campus. Access to E-mail and the Internet requires a password assignment from the computer center. All students may access the system 7:45 a.m to 10:30 P.M. in person and anytime by modem. There are no time limits and no fees.
Graduates: About 350 bachelor’s degrees are awarded annually. The most popular majors are business administration, liberal studies, and psychology.
