Procedure: Freshmen are admitted in the fall. Entrance exams should be taken by fall of the senior year. There are early decision and deferred admissions plans. Early decision applications should be filed by November 1; regular applications, by January 9 for fall entry, along with a $40 fee. Notification of early decision is sent December 15; regular decision, April 2. 1142 early decision candidates were accepted for the 1997-98 class. 7% of ail applicants are on a waiting list.
Transfer: 131 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Applicants should have completed at least 27 semester hours of transferable credit and maintained a 3.5 GPA in all courses. Admission depends on openings in each undergraduate college. 60 credits of 120 must be completed at Notre Dame.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, including small group sessions for students, larger sessions for parents, and tours for all. Visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Admissions telephone receptionists.
Financial Aid: In 1997-98, 76% of all freshmen and 73% of continuing students received some form of financial aid. 47% of freshmen and 46% of continuing students received need-based aid. The average freshman award was $13,650. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $9815 ($27,200 maximum); loans averaged $3960 ($5625 maximum); and work contracts averaged $1050 ($2100 maximum). 46% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $1200. The average financial indebtedness of the 1997 graduate was $16,250. Notre Dame is a member of CSS. The CSS/Profile or FAFSA and federal income tax return are required. The fall application deadline is February 15.
