Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science and wildlife biology), BUSINESS (accountŽing, banking and finance, business administration and management, business economics, and international business management), COMŽMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art history and appreciation, comŽmunications, dramatic arts, English, fine arts, French, German, music, Spanish, and studio art), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (chemistry, computer science, information sciences and systems, matheŽmatics, and physics), EDUCATION (art, business, elementary, music, and secondary), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (environmental science), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (predentistry and premedicine), SOCIAL SCIENCE (economics, history, philosophy, poŽlitical science/government, prelaw, psychology, religion, and sociology). Biology, education, and music are the strongest academically. Business, education, and psychology are the largest.
Required: To graduate, all students must complete 132 credit hours, including 24 to 30 hours in the major and 42 hours in 6 basic areas of study, with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Courses in phys ed, computer sciŽence, and English composition are required.
Special: Internships are encouraged for students in most majors during the interim of the sophomore year. Baker also offers study abroad, B.A.-B.S. and accelerated degree programs, dual majors, pass/fail opŽtions, and credit for life, military, and work experience. A 3-2 engineerŽing degree may be earned in conjunction with Washington University. An interdisciplinary applied environmental sciences program offers maŽjors in environmental chemistry, wildlife biology, and environmental technology and management. There are 13 national honor societies, a freshman honors program, and 9 departmental honors programs.
Faculty/Classroom: 67% of faculty are male; 33%, female. Ai! teach undergraduates and 25% both teach and do research. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 35; in a lab, 20; and in a regular course, 24.
Admissions: 87% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The ACT scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: 28% below 21, 30% beŽtween 21 and 23, 20% between 24 and 26, 13% between 27 and 28, and 9% above 28. There were 6 National Merit semifinalists. 10 freshŽmen graduated first in their class.
