Disabled Students: All of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, and lowered telephones are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tu¬toring in some subjects. There is a reader service for the blind, and re¬medial math, reading, and writing.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, escort service, informal discussions, and pamphlets/ posters/films. There are emergency telephones, lighted pathways/ sidewalks, motorist-assist programs, safety and self-awareness programs for students and parents, and 24-hour residence hall monitoring.
Programs of Study: ESU confers B.A., B.S., B.F.A., B.G.S., B.Mus., B.Mus.Ed., B.S.Bus., B.S.Ed., and B.S.N. degrees. Master’s and doc¬toral degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIO¬LOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science), BUSINESS (account¬ing, banking and finance, business administration and management, business economics, international business management, management information systems, management science, marketing/retailing/ merchandising, and recreation and leisure services), COMMUNICA¬TIONS AND THE ARTS (art, communications, dramatic arts, English, linguistics, music, and speech/debate/rhetoric), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (chemistry, computer management, computer programming, computer science, earth science, information sciences and systems, mathematics, physical sciences, and physics), EDUCA¬TION (art, business, elementary, foreign languages, health, music, phys¬ical, recreation, and secondary), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (nursing and rehabilitation therapy), SOCIAL SCIENCE (economics, history, human services, political science/government, psychology, social science, and sociology). Elementary education is the strongest academically and the largest.
Required: To graduate, all students must complete at least 124 credit hours, including 40 in upper-division courses, with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Students must also pass competency exams in reading, math, and writing and complete the general education program for their field of study.
Special: ESU offers a co-op program in journalism with the University of Kansas, study abroad, work-study programs, a general studies de¬gree, B.A.-B.S. degrees, dual and student-designed majors, 3-2 engi¬neering degrees with Kansas State University and the University of Kan¬sas, credit for military experience, nondegree study, independent study, evening and Saturday classes, and pass/no credit options. There is 1 national honor society, a freshman honors program, and 7 departmen¬tal honors programs.
Faculty/Classroom: 64% of faculty are male; 36%, female. 92% teach undergraduates. Graduate students teach 25% of introductory courses. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 39; in a lab¬oratory, 27; and in a regular course, 19.
Admissions: All of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The ACT scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were; 47% below 21, 25% be¬tween 21 and 23, 15% between 24 and 26, 9% between 27 and 28, and 4% above 28.
Requirements: The ACT is required. Non-Kansas residents must sub¬mit high school transcripts and may substitute SAT I scores for the ACT if the ACT isn’t given in their geographic area. All applicants must be graduates of an accredited secondary school or have a GED certificate. Applications are accepted on-line. AP and CLEP credits are accepted.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted to all sessions. Entrance exams should be taken in October or December of the senior year. There are early decision, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Appli¬cation deadlines are open. The application fee is $15. The college ac¬cepts all in-state residents who apply. Notification is sent on a roiling ba¬sis.
Transfer: 438 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Applicants must submit official transcripts of all previous college work. The minimum GPA depends on the number of semester hours earned. Physical activity requirements must be met. 30 credits of 124 must be completed at ESU.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Director of Admissions.
Financial Aid: In 1997-98, 73% of all freshmen and 68% of continu¬ing students received some form of financial aid. 67% of freshmen and 52% of continuing students received need-based aid. The average fresh¬man award was $3783. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $1381; loans averaged $2448; work contracts averaged $1795; and veterans’ benefits averaged $4801. 67% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $1454. The average financial indebtedness of the 1997 graduate was $10,109. ESU is a member of CSS. The FAFSA is required. The fall application deadline is March 15.
International Students: There are 100 international students en¬rolled. The school actively recruits these students. They must score 525 on the TOEFL and also take the MELAB or the college’s own test.
