Disabled Students: 60% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, lowered telephones, Ar-kenstone reader, and TDD are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tu¬toring in most subjects. There is remedial math and reading.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, escort service, informal discussions, and emergency tele¬phones. There are lighted pathways/sidewalks.
Programs of Study: FHSU confers B.A., B.S., B.B.A., B.F.A., B.G.S., B.M., and B.S.W. degrees. Associate and master’s degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in AGRICULTURE (agri¬cultural business management and agriculture), BIOLOGICAL SCI¬ENCE (biology/biological science}, BUSINESS (accounting, banking and finance, business administration and management, management in¬formation systems, marketing/retailing/merchandising, and office su¬pervision and management), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art, communications, English, fine arts, French, German, modern lan¬guage, .music, music performance, music theory and composition, Spanish, and telecommunications), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCI¬ENCE (chemistry, computer science, geology, information sciences and systems, mathematics, physical sciences, physics, radiological technolo¬gy, and science), EDUCATION (art, elementary, music, physical, and technical), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (nursing and speech pathology/ audiology), SOCIAL SCIENCE (criminal justice, economics, history, lib¬eral arts/general studies, philosophy, political science/government, psy¬chology, social work, and sociology). Speech pathology is the strongest academically. Teacher education, business administration, and nursing are the largest.
Required: To graduate, students must earn an overall GPA of 2.0 for 124 credit hours, including 40 hours in upper-level study, 30 hours in the major, and 4 hours in phys ed. The 55-hour core curriculum in¬cludes courses addressing personal wellness, analysis and communica¬tion, international studies, humanities, math, and natural, social, and be¬havioral sciences.
Special: Students may, with approval, earn their degrees through a co¬operative program with FHSU and another accredited institution, or a correspondence or extension school. Cross-registration with several community colleges, internships, study abroad, work-study programs, a 3-2 engineering degree with Kansas State University, B.A.-B.S. de¬grees, a general studies degree, and pass/fail options are available. There are 21 national honor societies, and a freshman honors program.
Faculty/Classroom: 68% of faculty are male; 32%, female. All teach undergraduates. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 17; in a lab, 17; and in a regular course, *18.
Admissions: The ACT scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: 43% below 21, 28% between 21 and 23, 20% between 24 and 26, 5% between 27 and 28, and 4% above 28. There were 2 National Merit semifinalists.
Requirements: The ACT is recommended. A GPA of 2.0 is required. Candidates for admission who are residents of Kansas must graduate from an accredited secondary school or earn a GED. Nonresidents must have earned better than a 2.0 GPA as well. Applications may be submit¬ted via the Web site at wwwihsu.edu. AP and CLEP credits are accept¬ed.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall, spring, and summer. Entrance exams should be taken in the senior year. Application deadlines are open. The application fee is $20. The university accepts all in-state resi¬dents who apply. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 416 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Applicants must have a minimum college GPA of 2.0 and submit official college tran¬scripts from all institutions previously attended. 30 credits of 124 must be completed at FHSU.
