Disabled Students: 50% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, and special class scheduling are available.

Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in most subjects. There is remedial math, reading, and writing.

Campus Safety and Security: Measures include self-defense education, escort service, pamphlets/posters/films, Sighted pathways/ sidewalks, and a night security guard. In addition, students are issued individual residence hall security and room keys.

Programs of Study: Ottawa confers the B.A. degree. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science), BUSINESS (accounting, business administration and management, and management information systems), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art, communications, dramatic arts, English, and music), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (chemistry, information sciences and systems, and mathematics), EDUCATION {elementary and physical), SOCIAL SCIENCE {history, human services, political science/ government, psychology, religion, and sociology). English, business, and mathematics are the strongest academically. Business, teacher education, and human services are the largest.

Required: To graduate, students must complete 9 courses in 8 academic areas with a minimum GPA of 2.0. The university requires students to complete 124 semester hours, with 24 to 40 in the major. Three interdisciplinary general education seminars must be completed. In addition, students must attend 10 University Program events each semester for 6 semesters.

Special: Internships are available, especially in business, human services, and teacher education. Student-designed majors are an option. A 3 + 1 degree in medical technology and preprofessiona! programs in premedicine, predentistry, prelaw, and preministry are available. Work-study programs are also offered. There are 2 national honor societies.

Faculty/Classroom: 60% of faculty are male; 40%, female. All teach undergraduates. The average class size in a lab is 12.

Admissions: 92% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The ACT scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: 55% below 21. 28% between 21 and 23, 12% between 24 and 26, 3% between 27 and 28, and 2% above 28. 19% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 55% were in the top two fifths. 3 freshmen graduated first in their class.

Requirements: The ACT is required. Ottawa requires applicants to be in the upper 50% of their class. A GPA of 2.0 is required. The GED is accepted. There are no specific high school courses required, but a sound college preparatory curriculum is highly recommended. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are parents or siblings attending the school, recommendations by alumni, and recommendations by school officials.

Procedure: Freshmen are admitted to all sessions. Entrance exams should be taken as early as possible. Application deadlines are open. The application fee is $15. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.

Transfer: 47 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Transfer applicants must submit transcripts from all colleges attended and must have a 2.0 GPA and 12 hours of college credit, or else they must meet freshman requirements. 30 credits of 124 must be completed at Ottawa.

Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, including Discovery Day in the early spring, which gives prospective students a chance to meet faculty, students, and staff and to learn more about Ottawa University, the admissions process, and financial aid. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight.
