Predentistry, premedicine, psychology, and accounting are the strongest academically. Business administration, elementary education, engineering technology, communications, and psychology are the largest.
Required: To graduate, students must complete 124 semester hours, including 35 to 60 hours in the major, with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Courses in English, speech, math, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural and physical sciences, producing and consuming, and lifetime fitness are required.
Special: Co-op and work-study programs, internships, a general studies degree, dual majors, 3-2 engineering degrees with the University of Kansas and Kansas State University, credit by exam, nondegree study, and pass/fail options are available. The university has student exchange programs with 70 countries. There are 22 national honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa, a freshman honors program, and 23 departmental honors programs.
Faculty/Classroom: 71% of faculty are male; 29%, female. 96% teach undergraduates and 83% do research. Graduate students teach 5% of introductory courses. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 50; in a laboratory, 20; and in a regular course, 35.
Admissions: 97% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted.
Requirements: The ACT is required. The university has an open admissions policy for Kansas students who graduated from an accredited high school or have earned the GED. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, geographic diversity, and ability to finance college education.
