Admissions: 94% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-64% below 500, 29% between 500 and 599. and 7% between 600 and 700; Math-43% below 500, 43% between 500 and 599, and 14% between 600 and 700. The ACT scores were 32% below 21, 28% between 21 and 23, 20% between 24 and 26, 13% between 27 and 28, and 7% above 28. 44% of the current freshmen were in the top quarter of their class; 78% were in the top half. There was 1 National Merit finalist.
Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required. All candidates for admission must graduate from an accredited secondary school with a specified college-bound curriculum and a GPA of 2.5. The GED is accepted and interviews are recommended. AP and CLEP credits are accepted.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall, spring, and summer. There is a deferred admissions plan. Applications should be filed by August 1 for fall entry and January 1 for spring entry, along with a $15 fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 88 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Applicants must have a college GPA of 2.0 and must submit an essay. 30 credits of 124 must be completed at Southwestern.
Visiting: There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Admission Office.
Financial Aid: In 1997-98, 88% of all freshmen and 90% of continuing students received some form of financial aid. 61% of continuing students received need-based aid. The average freshman award was $9539. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $5539 ($7065 maximum); and loans averaged $4000 ($5625 maximum). Average annual earnings from campus work are $700. The average financial indebtedness of the 1997 graduate was $14,436. Southwestern is a member of CSS. The FAFSA and the college’s own financial statement are required. The fall application deadline is July 1.
