Disabled Students: Almost all of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, lowered telephones, wheelchairs, and braille typewriters are available. Interpreters for the hearing impaired, note taking, and typing services are also offered.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in most subjects. There is a reader service for the blind, and remedial math, reading, and writing. Group and individual psychological services are available for students and their families.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, self-defense education, escort service, and shuttle buses. There are informal discussions, pamphlets/posters/films, emergency telephones, lighted pathways/sidewalks, and a bicycle patrol.
Programs of Study: WSU confers B.A., B.S., B.A.E., B.B.A., B.F.A., B.G.S., B.H.S., B.M., B.M.E., B.S.A.E., B.S.E.E., B.S.I.E., B.S.M.E., and B.S.N. degrees. Associate, master’s, and doctoral degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science), BUSINESS (accounting, banking and finance, business administration and management, entrepreneurial studies, human resources, international business management, management science, and marketing/retailing/merchandising), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art history and appreciation, communications, English, French, German, graphic design, Latin, music, Spanish, studio art, and visual and performing arts), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, and physics), EDUCATION (art, elementary, music, physical, secondary, and special), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (aeronautical engineering, electrical/electronics engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, and mechanical engineering), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (health care administration, medical laboratory technology, nursing, physician’s assistant, and speech pathology/ audiology), SOCIAL SCIENCE (anthropology, criminal justice, economics, ethnic studies, gerontology, history, liberal arts/general studies, philosophy, political science/government, psychology, social work, sociology, and women’s studies). Aerospace engineering, engineering, and business are the strongest academically.
Required: To graduate, students need at least 124 credit hours, with a GPA of 2.0 to 2.5, depending on the major. Specific distribution requirements as well as department requirements must also be met.
Special: WSU offers co-op programs, internships, study abroad, work-study programs, and a Washington semester. Dual and student-designed majors, a general studies degree, credit by exam, nondegree study, and pass/fail options are also available. There are 38 national honor societies, and a freshman honors program.
Faculty/Classroom: 70% of faculty are male; 30%, female. 85% teach undergraduates and 85% do research. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 22; in a lab, 22; and in a regular course, 28.
Admissions: The ACT scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: 43% below 21, 24% between 21 and 23. 22% between 24 and 26, 6% between 27 and 28, and 5% above 28. There were 10 National Merit finalists in a recent year.
Requirements: Applicants under 21 years of age who are Kansas residents must be graduates of an accredited secondary school or have the GED and must submit ACT scores, Out-of-state applicants must submit ACT or SAT I scores; they must have a 2.0 GPA, or at least a 21 ACT composite score or a minimum combined SAT I of 970, or rank in the upper half of their graduating class. Procedure: Freshmen are admitted to all sessions. There are early admissions and deferred admissions plans. Students are encouraged to submit applications by August 1 for fall entry and January 1 for spring entry. The application fee is $15 per semester/session. The college accepts all in-state residents who apply. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
