Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and winter. There are early decision, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Early decision applications should be filed by January 1; regular applications, by January 15 for fall entry and November 1 for winter entry, along with a $50 fee. Notification of early decision is sent January 24; regular decision, by March 31. 150 early decision candidates were accepted for the 1997-98 class. 7% of all applicants are on a waiting list.
Transfer: 12 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. More weight is given to the student’s college record than to high school credentials. 16 courses of 32 must be completed at Bates.
Visiting: There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Admissions Office.
Financial Aid: 49% of all students received some form of financial aid. 43% of freshmen and 42% of continuing students received need-based aid. The average freshman award was $19,384. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $14,332 ($24,290 maximum); loans averaged $3651 ($4000 maximum); and work contracts averaged $1400. 50% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $1400. Bates is a member of CSS. The CSS/Profile or FAFSA is required. Parent and student tax returns and W-2 forms are also required. The fall application deadline is January 15.
International Students: There are 31 international students enrolled. The school actively recruits these students. They must take the TOEFL.
Computers: The mainframes are a DEC ALPHA 2100, a Dual Processor RISC, and a DEC 1000 RISC. There are 130 public PCs with access to the mainframe and Internet, An additional 150 PCs are in de-partmental labs and 75% can access the mainframe and Internet. All students may access the system. There are no time limits and no fees.
