Special: Students may take advantage of about 100 approved programs all over the world, including Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. Intercollegiate Sri Lanka Education (ISLE), South India Term Abroad (SITA), The Swedish Program, Semester in Environmental Science at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, and the Twelve College Exchange (including Williams College-Mystic Seaport and National Theater Institute). Dual majors in any combination, interdisciplinary majors, student-designed majors, and pass/fail options are available. The college offers a 3-2 engineering degree with the California Institute of Technology and Columbia University and 3-2 engineering and 3-3 legal studies degrees with Columbia University Law School. There is a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Faculty/Classroom: 64% of faculty are male; 36%, female. All teach and do research. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 27 and in a regular course, 17.
Admissions: 34% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were; Verbal-4% below 500, 13% between 500 and 599, 50% between 600 and 700, and 33% above 700; Math-1% below 500, 16% between 500 and 599, 52% between 600 and 700, and 31% above 700. 92% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 99% were in the top two fifths. There was 1 National Merit finalist and 16 semifinalists. 25 freshmen graduated first in their class.
