Transfer: 11 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. College grades of B or better are required to transfer. Applicants should submit high school and college transcripts, a dean’s or adviser’s statement from the most recent college attended, and 2 recommendations from recent professors. 16 course credits of 32 must be completed at Bowdoin.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, in which students should be prepared to talk informally about their academic record, interests, talents, and goals. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Admissions Office.
Financial Aid: In 1997-98, 45% of all freshmen and 40% of continuing students received some form of financial aid, including need-based aid. The average freshman award was $19,771. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $15,869 ($29,500 maximum); loans averaged $3074 ($4100 maximum); and work contracts averaged $895 ($900 maximum). 87% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $967. The average financial indebtedness of the 1996 graduate was $15,820. Bowdoin is a member of CSS. The CSS/Profile or FAFSA and the college’s own financial statement are required. The fall application deadline is February 15.
International Students: There are 47 international students enrolled. The school actively recruits these students. Applicants must score 600 on the TOEFL. SAT I scores must be submitted at matriculation for counseling and placement.
Computers: The mainframe is a 2 DEC ALPHA 1000 servers. Students access servers from 110 public PCs and terminals. Network access, including the Internet and the Web, is available from all dorm rooms. 600 students access the network from their dorm rooms. All students may access the system 24 hours a day. There are no time limits and no fees. It is recommended that students have personal computers.
Graduates: In 1997, 386 bachelor’s degrees were awarded. The most popular majors were government and legal studies (16%), biology (13%), and history (13%). In an average class, 1% graduate in 3 years, 82% in 4 years, 90% in 5 years, and 92% in 6 years. 40 companies recruited on campus in 1996-97. Of the 1996 graduating class, 26% were enrolled in graduate school within 6 months of graduation and 71% were employed.
