Disabled Students: 90% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, and lowered telephones are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in every subject. There is a reader service for the blind, a writing center, and a support program for learning-disabled students.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, self-defense education, escort service, and shuttle buses. There are informal discussions, pamphlets/posters/films, emergency telephones, lighted pathways/sidewalks, a women’s safety program, a property identification program, party monitors (security officers), and a student emergency response team.
Programs of Study: Colby confers the A.B. degree. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biochemistry, biology/ biological science, and cell biology). COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art, art history and appreciation, classics, English, German, music, performing arts, Russian, Spanish, and studio art), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (chemistry, computer science, earth science, geology, mathematics, and physics), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (environmental science), SOCIAL SCIENCE (African American studies, American studies, anthropology, classical/ ancient civilization, East Asian studies, economics, French studies, history, international studies, Latin American studies, philosophy, political science/government, psychology, religion, sociology, and women’s studies). Biology, economics, and government are the strongest academically. Biology, English, and economics are the largest.
Required: All students must take English composition and fulfill a foreign language requirement. They must also take 2 courses in the natural sciences and 1 course each in the arts, historical studies, literature, quantitative reasoning, social sciences, and human or cultural diversity, and earn 4 credits in wellness through seminars, classes, or participation in athletics. To graduate, students must complete a total of 120 credit hours, including 3 January term courses, and maintain a GPA of 2.0.
Special: Colby offers study abroad through various programs in numerous countries, Washington semester programs through American University and the Washington Center, on-campus work-study, exchange programs with various colleges and universities, maritime and oceanographic studies programs, dual and student-designed majors, and a 3-2 engineering degree with Dartmouth College, the University of Rochester, and Case Western Reserve University. There are 9 national honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa, and 16 departmental honors programs.
