Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in every subject. There is remedial math, reading, and writing. Academic support for writing papers, study skills, and time management is available, as is help for students with learning disabilities.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include self-defense education, informal discussions, pamphlets/posters/films, and safety training by local police.
Programs of Study: MECA confers the B.F.A. degree. Master’s degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (graphic design, metal/jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (ceramic science). Ceramics has the largest enrollment.
Required: All students must take 2 years of studio foundation courses (drawing and design), plus courses in English composition, art history, humanities, social science, and natural science. A semester in critical issues and 2 in Western civilization are also required. 134 total credit hours are necessary, with 36 class credits in the major. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. A senior thesis is required.
Special: Cross-registration with Bowdoin College and the Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities is available, as are internships utilizing professional artists and design and photography studios. The continuing studies program provides for nondegree study. A minor in art history is also offered, as are dual and student-designed majors.
Faculty/Classroom: 60% of faculty are male; 40%, female. All teach undergraduates. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 100; in a lab, 18; and in a regular course,
Admissions: 77% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. 11% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 34% were in the top two fifths.
Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required. It is recommended that candidates for admission complete 4 years of English, 3 years each of art and math, and 2 years each of foreign language, science, and social studies. AP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are evidence of special talent, recommendations by school officials, and advanced placement or honor courses.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. Entrance exams should be taken in the fall of the senior year. There are early admissions and deferred admissions plans. Application deadlines are open. The application fee is $40. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 44 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. 67 credits of 134 must be completed at MECA.
