Faculty/Classroom: 85% of faculty are male; 15%, female. All teach undergraduates. No introductory courses are taught by graduate students. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 30; in a lab, 15; and in a regular course, 25.
Admissions: 76% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-45% below 500, 42% between 500 and 599, 11% between 600 and 700, and 1% above 700; Math-36% below 500, 46% between 500 and 599, and 18% between 600 and 700. 38% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 68% were in the top two fifths.
Requirements: The SAT 1 or ACT is required. MMA requires applicants to be in the upper 50% of their class. A GPA of 2.0 is required. Candidates for admission must have completed 4 years of English, 3 of math, and 2 of lab science, with 1 year of a foreign language recommended. Applications are accepted on-line via CollegeLink. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, leadership record, and evidence of special talent.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. Entrance exams should be taken as early as possible in the senior year. There are early decision and deferred admissions plans. Early decision applications should be filed by December 20; regular applications, by July 1 for fall entry and November 1 for spring entry, along with a $15 fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis. 15 early decision candidates were accepted for a recent class.
Transfer: Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA in previous college work and meet the same prerequisites as entering freshmen. Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, consisting of 3 open houses per year; campus visits are available weekdays throughout the year. Financial Aid: MMA is a member of CSS. The FAFSA is required. The fall application deadline is March 1.
International Students: There are 10 international students enrolled. Applicants must score 550 on the TOEFL.
