Special: Saint Joe’s offers internships, cross-registration with 6 southern Maine colleges, study in Nova Scotia, a semester at sea, dual majors in most programs, and limited no degree study. Students may participate in work-study programs either on or off campus. The college has an external degree program providing directed home study in several fields. There are 2 national honor societies; a freshman honors program, and 6 departmental honors programs.
Faculty/Classroom: 36% of faculty are male; 64%, female. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 35; in a lab, 16; and in a regular course, 22.
Admissions: 87% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. In a recent year, 3 freshmen graduated first in their class.
Requirements: The SAT I is required. Candidates for admission must be high school graduates who have completed 4 units in English, 3 to 4 in math, 2 in foreign language, and 1 to 3 each in history, science, and social studies. A minimum grade average of 70 is required. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, leadership record, and evidence of special talent.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. Entrance exams should be taken by January of the senior year. There are early admissions and deferred admissions plans. Application deadlines are open, along with a $25 fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 48 transfer students enrolled in a recent year. Transfer students should have a minimum GPA of 2.0. 32 credits of 128 must be completed at Saint Joe’s.
