Disabled Students: 75% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, and lowered drinking fountains are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in some subjects, including 100- and 200-Ievel courses. There is a reader service for the blind. Developmental courses are offered in remedial math, remedial reading, and remedial writing.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, self-defense education, escort service, and informal discussions. There are pamphlets/posters/films, emergency telephones, and lighted pathways/sidewalks.
Programs of Study: Maine confers B.A. and B.S. degrees. Associate, masters, and doctoral degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in AGRICULTURE (agriculture, animal science, fishing and fisheries, forest engineering, forestry and related sciences, horticulture, natural resource management, wildlife management, and wood science), BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biochemistry, biology/biological science, biotechnology, botany, cell biology, marine science, microbiology, molecular biology, nutrition, and zoology), BUSINESS (business administration and management), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art, communications, dramatic arts, English, French, German, journalism, Latin, modern language, music, music performance, romance languages, Spanish, and speech/debate/rhetoric), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, and physics), EDUCATION (art, elementary, health, music, physical, recreation, and secondary), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, construction technology, electrical/ electronics engineering, electrical/electronics engineering technology, engineering physics, environmental science, geophysical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, paper and pulp science, and surveying engineering), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (clinical science, medical laboratory technology, nursing, and speech pathology/audio logy), SOCIAL SCIENCE (anthropology, child psychology/development, economics, food science, history, international studies, parks and recreation management, philosophy, political science/government, psychology, public administration, social work, and sociology). Engineering and technology, business administration, and forest resources are the strongest academically. Business administration, education, and chemical engineering are the largest.
Required: A minimum of 120 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required for graduation. 72 hours must be completed in the student’s major. The distribution and curricula requirements vary with each undergraduate college. All students are required to take English 101.
Special: A Professional Preparation Team program is offered by the College of Education. Cross-registration through the National Student Exchange and at other University of Maine campuses, internships at the upper level, a Washington semester, work-study programs both on and off campus, a B.A.-B.S. degree, dual majors, a general studies degree, and pass/fail options are available. Students may study abroad in more than 40 countries. Cooperative programs are available in most majors, and accelerated degree programs may be arranged. There is Phi Beta Kappa, a freshman honors program, and 5 departmental honors programs.
