Faculty/Classroom: 67% of faculty are male; 33%, female. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 35; in a laboratory, 16; and in a regular course, 24.
Admissions: 75% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-28% below 500, 47% between 500 and 599, 23% between 600 and 700, and 2% above 700; Math-26% below 500, 46% between 500 and 599, 26% between 600 and 700, and 2% above 700. 42% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 74% were in the top two fifths. 23 freshmen graduated first in their class.
Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required. Guidance counselor” recommendation is required for high school students. The GED is accepted. Required class rank, GPA, and the number of academic or Carnegie credits vary by program. The required secondary school courses also vary by program but should include 4 credits of English, 3 of math, and 2 each of science, social studies, and a foreign language, plus 3 electives. The school recommends that students submit an essay. An audition is required for music majors. Applications are accepted on computer disk via College Link and Expanse. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, recommendations by school officials, and evidence of special talent.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. Entrance exams should be taken by January of the senior year. There are early admissions and deferred admissions plans. Early decision applications should be filed by November 30; regular applications, by February 1 for fall entry and November 1 for spring entry, along with a $25 fee. Notification of early decision is sent December 15; regular decision, on a rolling basis beginning January 15.
Transfer: 422 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Students must submit all college and high school transcripts. A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required. 30 credits of 120 must be completed at Maine.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, including an opening welcome, classroom visits, campus tours, adviser sessions, and registration. Financial Aid: In 1997-98, 50% of all freshmen and 72% of continuing students received some form of financial aid, including need-based aid. The average freshman award was $6063. Of that total, scholar* ships or need-based grants averaged $3300 ($5200 maximum); loans averaged $3100 ($5625 maximum); and work contracts averaged $1205 ($1500 maximum). 36% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $1205. The average financial indebtedness of the 1997 graduate was $13,000. Maine is a member of CSS. The FAFSA is required. The fall application deadline is March 1.
International Students: There are 400 international students enrolled. The school actively recruits these students. They must score 530 on the TOEFL and also take the SAT I or the ACT, for which minimum score requirements vary by program.
Computers: The mainframe is an IBM 3090 UM/CMS. There are 3 computer clusters on campus, and PCs are available in the residence hails. All students may access the system 24 hours a day. There are no time limits and no fees.
Graduates: In a recent class, the most popular majors were elementary education (9%), business administration (9%), and nursing (6%). In an average class, 28% graduate in 4 years, 48% in 5 years, and 53% in 6 years.
