Disabled Students: 95% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, and lowered telephones are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in some subjects. There is a reader service for the blind and remedial math, reading, and writing.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include pamphlets/ posters/films and lighted pathways/sidewalks.
Programs of Study: UMA confers B.A., B.M., B.S.B.A., and B.S.P.A. degrees. Associate degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BUSINESS (accounting, business administration and management, and small business management), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (English and music}, COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (mathematics), SOCIAL SCIENCE (public administration and social science). Business administration is the largest.
Required: Ail students must complete at least 120 hours (131 for B.M. students), with a minimum GPA of 2.0. All degree programs require courses in English and communications, humanities, math and computer sciences, and social sciences. Specific course requirements differ by degree program.
Special: Work-study and internship programs with local employers, a general studies degree, no degree study, and pass/fail options are available. UMA administers a displaced homemakers project, offering personal and professional development training and counseling. There is 1 national honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, and 1 departmental honors program.
Faculty/Classroom: 57% of faculty are male; 43%, female. All teach undergraduates. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 30; in a lab, 15; and in a regular course, 30.
Admissions: 68% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. 12% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 63% were in the top two fifths.
Requirements: Applicants should have a high school diploma or the GED. Recommended secondary preparation varies according to the degree program. Students are encouraged to submit SAT 1 scores for placement only. Applicants for the B.M. program must audition. AP and CLEP credits are accepted.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted to all sessions. Entrance exams should be taken in November or January of the senior year. There are early decision, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Early decision applications should be filed by November 1; regular applications, by June 15 for fall entry and October 15 for spring entry, along with a $25 fee. The college accepts all applicants. Notification of early decision is sent December 1; regular decision, on a rolling basis. A waiting list is an active part of the admissions procedure.
Transfer: 271 transfer students enrolled in a recent year. 30 credits of 120 or 131 must be completed at UMA.
