Special: Study abroad in 4 countries, as well as numerous opportunities through the National Student Exchange program, work-study with UMF, and student-designed majors are available. Internships are required in rehabilitation and health and are available in all disciplines. Also possible is interdisciplinary field study, a ski industry certificate, nondegree study, and pass/fail options. There are 2 national honor societies, a freshman honors program, and 10 departmental honors programs.
Faculty/Classroom: 59% of faculty are male; 41%, female. All teach undergraduates. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 50; in a laboratory, 18; and in a regular course, 25.
Admissions: 75% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-44% below 500, 41% between 500 and 599, 14% between 600 and 700, and 1% above 700; Math-50% below 500, 39% between 500 and 599, 10% between 600 and 700, and 1% above 700. 23% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 63% were in the top two fifths.
Requirements: UMF requires applicants to be in the upper 50% of their class. A GPA of 2.4 is required. Applicants are required to have 16 to 19 college preparatory courses including 4 in English, 3 to 5 in math, 3 electives, 2 to 3 in lab science, and 2 each in social science and foreign language. An essay is required, and an interview recommended. A counselor recommendation is required. The GED is accepted for older, highly motivated students. Applications are accepted on-line via the World Wide Web and ExPAN. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, recommendations by school officials, and leadership record.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. There are early action, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Early action applications should be filed by December 15; regular fall entry applications, by March 1; and spring and summer applications anytime, along with a $25 fee. Notification of early decision is sent January 7; regular decision, on a rolling basis. 73 early action candidates were accepted for the 1997-98 class.
Transfer: 156 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 (2.5 for some majors). 30 credits of 120 must be completed at UMF.
