Disabled Students: 80% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, and lowered telephones are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in every subject. There is a reader service for the blind, and remedial math, reading, and writing.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include informal discussions,
pamphlets/posters/films, and lighted pathways/sidewalks.
Programs of Study: UMFK confers B.A., B.S., B.S.E.S, B.S.N., and B.U.S. degrees. Associate degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science), BUSINESS (business administration and management), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (English and French), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (computer science), EDUCATION (elementary and middle school), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (environmental science), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (nursing), SOCIAL SCIENCE (behavioral science, liberal arts/general studies, and social science). Environmental studies, nursing, and biology are the strongest academically. Education, nursing, and behavioral science are the largest.
Required: A minimum GPA of 2.0 and a total of 120 credit hours (2.5 and 127 credit hours for nursing) are required for graduation. Curricula and distribution requirements vary by major.
Special: Internships are required for business majors. A general studies degree, a B.A.-B.S- degree in bilingual-bicultural studies, credit for life experience, and nondegree study are available. Students may cross-register with the College Universitaire St. Louis Maillet in New Brunswick. Study abroad may be arranged in Canada, France, and Mexico through the University of Maine at Farmington. Interactive television courses broadcasted from other universities are available on campus. There is 1 national honor society.
Faculty/Classroom: 62% of faculty are male; 38%, female. All teach undergraduates.
Admissions: 86% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. The SAT I scores for the 1997-98 freshman class were: Verbal-73% below 500, 25% between 500 and 599, 2% between 600 and 700, and 1% above 700; Math–65% below 500, 31% between 500 and 599, and 4% between 600 and 700. 18% of the current freshmen were in the top fifth of their class; 59% were in the top two fifths.
Requirements: The ACT is recommended. Applicants should be graduates of an accredited secondary school. The GED is accepted. Required secondary school courses include 4 years of English and 2 each of social studies, math, and lab science. A foreign language is suggested. An essay and an interview are recommended. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are recommendations by school officials, advanced placement or honor courses, and evidence of special talent.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. Entrance exams should be taken before March of the senior year. There are early decision, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Application deadlines are open and there is a $25 fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 117 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. Applicants must submit transcripts from each college and secondary school attended. The SAT I and an interview are recommended. 30 credits of 120 must be completed at UMFK.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, including placement testing, meetings with advisers, campus tours, and get-aquainted activities. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Admissions Office.
Financial Aid: In a recent year, 80% of all students received some form of financial aid. 80% received need-based aid. The average freshman award was $5083. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $2287; loans averaged $1795; and work contracts averaged $1000. 25% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $1000. The average financial indebtedness of a recent graduate was $2520. UMFK is a member of CSS. The FAF-SA and income tax forms are required. The fall application deadline is April 1.
International Students: There are 144 international students enrolled. The school actively recruits these students. They must score 500 on the TOEFL and also take the college’s own test.
