Disabled Students: 85% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, and lowered drinking fountains are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in every subject. There is remedial math, reading, and writing.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include informal discussions, pamphiets/posters/films, lighted pathways/sidewalks, a keyless entry system for residence halls, and security patrol from 5 P.M. to 1 P.M. Sunday to Wednesday and from 5 P.M. to 5 A.M. Thursday to Saturday.
Programs of Study: UMM confers B.A. and B.S. degrees. Associate degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science and marine biology), BUSINESS (accounting, business administration and management, marketing/retailing/merchandising, and recreation and leisure services), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (English), EDUCATION (business, elementary, middle school, and secondary), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (environmental science), SOCIAL SCIENCE (behavioral science, history, human services, psychology, social science, and social work). Elementary education, marine biology, and environmental studies are the strongest academically.
Required: A minimum of 120 credit hours and a GPA of 2.0 are required for graduation. All students must complete the core requirements of 9 credits in English, 6 in history, 4 each in arts and lab science, 3 each in interdisciplinary studies, computer science, and math beyond algebra II, and 2 in phys ed.
Special: Co-op programs, cross-registration, internships, work-study programs, an accelerated degree program, a B.A.-B.S. degree, and a general studies degree are available. UMM also offers student-designed majors, credit for life experience, nondegree study, and a pass/fail option in certain courses. There is a transfer program in community health education with the University of Maine at Farmington. There is a freshman honors program.
Faculty/Classroom: 68% of faculty are male; 32%, female. AH teach undergraduates. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 19; in a lab, 13; and in a regular course, 16.
Admissions: 87% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. 3 freshmen graduated first in their class.
Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required, with a minimum composite SAT I score of 1000. UMM requires applicants to be in the upper 50% of their class. A GPA of 2.8 is required. All candidates must be graduates of an accredited secondary school. The GED is accepted. Required secondary school courses include 4 years of English, 3 each of social science and math, and 2 of laboratory science. 2 years of foreign language, an essay, and an interview are strongly recommended. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, evidence of special talent, and leadership record.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. There are early admissions and deferred admissions plans. Application deadlines are open; there is a $25 fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 59 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. A minimum college GPA of 2.0 and evidence of good standing are required of transfer applicants. 30 credits of 120 must be completed at UMM.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, consisting of programs just prior to fall and spring semester. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Assistant Director of Admissions.
