Disabled Students: All of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, and lowered telephones are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in most subjects. There is a reader service for the blind, and remedial math, reading, and writing.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, escort service, informal discussions, and pamphlets/ posters/films. There are emergency telephones and lighted pathways/ sidewalks.
Programs of Study: UM-Presque Isle confers B.A., B.S., B.F.A., B.L.S., B.S.Ed., and B.S.W. degrees. Associate degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science), BUSINESS (accounting, business administration and management, and recreation and leisure services), COMMU-
NICATIONS AND THE ARTS (art, communications, English, and French), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (mathematics), EDUCATION (art, elementary, English, foreign languages, health, mathematics, physical, science, secondary, and social science), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (environmental science), SOCIAL SCIENCE (behavioral science, criminal justice, history, international studies, liberal arts/general studies, political science/government, social science, and social work). Education, social work, and behavioral science are the largest.
Required: Core requirements for the B.A. degrees include 18 credits in humanities, 12 in social science, 11 in math/science, and 4 in phys ed/health. The student must complete a minimum number of credits, which varies according to major, with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in 120 to 128 credit hours. Requirements for the B.S. and other degrees vary considerably with each major.
Special: The university participates in transfer programs in agriculture, physical science, and engineering with the University of Maine at Orono. There is also cross-registration with Northern Maine Technical College, study abroad in France, Ireland, Canada (other countries are available), and internships in many majors. UM-Presque Isle offers work-study programs, dual and student-designed majors, and nondegree study. Students can apply for credit by exam and credit for life, military, and work experience. A credit/no credit option is available. There is a freshman honors program.
Faculty/Classroom: 70% of faculty are male; 30%, female. All teach undergraduates. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 25 and in a lab, 10.
Admissions: 88% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted. There were 2 National Merit semifinalists in a recent year.
Requirements: The SAT I is required. Applicants should have completed 16 academic credits at an accredited secondary school, including 4 in English, 2 each in math, science, and social studies, and the rest in electives. A GED certificate may be substituted. The university recommends an essay and an interview for all candidates. Art majors must submit a portfolio. Applications are accepted on-line at the school’s Web site. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, evidence of special talent, and recommendations by school officials.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted to all sessions. Entrance exams should be taken by January 1. There are early decision, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Applications may be filed up to the time when classes begin for fall and spring entry, along with a $25 fee. Notification is sent on a rolling basis.
Transfer: 129 transfer students enrolled in 1997-98. A GPA of 2.0 from an accredited college or university is required. It is recommended that applicants submit SAT I scores and arrange an interview. 30 credits of 120 must be completed at UM-Presque Isle.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, including advisement, a campus tour, and meetings with faculty and coaches. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact Bev McAvaddy.
Financial Aid: In 1997-98, 80% of all freshmen and 75% of continuing students received some form of financial aid. 75% of freshmen and 70% of continuing students received need-based aid. The average freshman award was $6002. 30% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $1255. The average financial indebtedness of the 1997 graduate was $6573. UM-Presque Isle is a member of CSS. The FAFSA is required. The fall priority application deadline is April 1.
International Students: There are 159 international students enrolled. The school actively recruits these students. They must score 500 on the TOEFL.
Computers: Apple and IBM PCs are available in the computer lab. 90 stations are available for student access. All students may access the system. There are no time limits. The fee is $4 per credit hour.
Graduates: In 1997, 219 bachelor’s degrees were awarded. The most popular majors were liberal studies (27%), elementary education (17%), and behavioral science (12%). In an average class, 40% graduate in 4 years and 60% in 5 years. 10 companies recruited on campus in 1996-97. Of the 1996 graduating class, 12% were enrolled in graduate school within 6 months of graduation.
