Disabled Students: 85% of the campus is accessible. Wheelchair ramps, elevators, special parking, specially equipped rest rooms, special class scheduling, lowered drinking fountains, lowered telephones, and stair climbers are available.
Services: Counseling and information services are available, as is tutoring in every subject. There is a reader service for the blind, and remedial math, reading, and writing, as well as a complete learning assistance center and a special program for the learning disabled.
Campus Safety and Security: Measures include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, escort service, shuttle buses, and informal discussions. There are pamphlets/posters/films and lighted pathways/sidewalks. A safe-ride program provides drivers for students.
Programs of Study: UNE confers B.A., B.S., andB.S.N. degrees. Associate, master’s, and doctoral degrees are also awarded. Bachelor’s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science, environmental biology, and marine biology), BUSINESS (business administration and management and sports management), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (English), EDUCATION (early childhood, elementary, science, and secondary), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (environmental science), HEALTH PROFESSIONS (biomedical science, dental hygiene, health care administration, medical laboratory technology, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, predentistry, premedicine, and prepharmacy), SOCIAL SCIENCE (American studies, human development, prelaw, and psychology). Health professions and life sciences are the strongest programs academically and have the largest enrollments, particularly physical therapy, occupational therapy, marine biology, and medical biology.
Required: A total of 120 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required for graduation. Students must take 41 credits in a liberal arts core curriculum of humanities, sciences, and social sciences. Most majors require 1-semester internships. Courses in English composition, computer science, and Western traditions are required.
Special: UNE offers cross-registration with the Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities, internships in all majors, work-study programs, study abroad, student-designed and dual majors in all departments, and a 3-4 medical program. The Freshmen Biology Learning Community provides combined studies in English and life sciences. There is 1 national honor society.
Faculty/Classroom: 49% of faculty are male; 51%, female. No introductory courses are taught by graduate students. The average class size in an introductory lecture is 35; in a lab, 20; and in a regular course, 20.
Admissions: 77% of the 1997-98 applicants were accepted.
Requirements: The SAT I or ACT is required. Applicants should be high school graduates with 4 years of English, 3 each of math and science, and 2 each of history and social studies. The GED is accepted, A personal interview is recommended. AP and CLEP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admissions decision are advanced placement or honor courses, recommendations by school officials, and geographic diversity.
Procedure: Freshmen are admitted fall and spring. Entrance exams should be taken in the spring of the junior year or the fall of the senior year. There are early decision, early admissions, and deferred admissions plans. Early decision applications should be filed by November 15. Regular application deadlines are open, except for the physical therapy applicant deadline of February 15. There is a $40 fee. Notification of early decision is sent December 15; regular decision, on a rolling basis. 84 early decision candidates were accepted for a recent class. 9% of all applicants are on a waiting list.
Transfer: 59 transfer students enrolled in a recent year. Applicants should present a GPA of at least 2.5 in college work. An interview is recommended. 30 credits of 120 must be completed at UNE.
Visiting: There are regularly scheduled orientations for prospective students, including a tour and information session, and an interview if the student has formally applied. There are guides for informal visits and visitors may sit in on classes and stay overnight. To schedule a visit, contact the Admissions Office.
Financial Aid: The average freshman award in a recent year was $8000. Of that total, scholarships or need-based grants averaged $1300 ($7500 maximum); loans averaged $4400 ($5625 maximum); and work contracts averaged $500 ($1000 maximum). 50% of undergraduates work part time. Average annual earnings from campus work are $900. The average financial indebtedness of a recent year’s graduate was $2200. UNE is a member of CSS. The FAFSA is required.
